MOMBASA, Kenya, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Kenyan police on Sunday launched investigations into the murder of two foreigners in the coastal city of Mombasa.

The nationalities of the two victims have yet to be established.

Mombasa police boss Christopher Rotich told journalists that the two, believed to be a couple, were brutally murdered and dumped on the roadside by unknown people. Rotich said they were tortured.

"We have launched investigation to establish the motive of the attackers. It appears they were murdered elsewhere and dumped here," said Rotich.

The police commander said the detectives recovered two mobile phones from the couple, adding that a special unit of officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigation has taken over the case.

"We are yet to establish their nationality but preliminary investigation indicates they were killed elsewhere and later dumped here," Rotich said.

The man was killed with sharp object while the female was hit with a blunt object.

In 2009, an elderly British couple were also murdered and dumped in the same place.
