MADRID, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- A 27-year-old man was arrested Saturday after being accused of causing nine fires on the island of Ibiza, located near Spain's Mediterranean coast.

The man is accused of causing several fires in the forests and fields of the island, a famous tourist destination that is part of the archipelago of the Balearic Islands.

The fires could seriously harm people as they were very close to houses, and nearby inhabitants have been evacuated from their homes.

Spanish police found enough evidence to prove the man was involved in the fires. According to the evidence, those fires had specific and similar characteristics that would prove they were caused by one person.

Spain and the Iberian Peninsula suffer big fires that cause serious damage every summer. Spain's neighboring country, Portugal, this summer experienced one of its deadliest forest fires in which more than 60 people died.
