KIEV, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Germany has allocated a grant of 1 million euros (about 1.2 million U.S. dollars) to support vulnerable residents of the conflict-hit eastern Ukraine, the press service of the German Embassy in Ukraine said Friday in a statement.
The funds were provided to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) for implementing humanitarian projects to assist people with disabilities and internally displaced persons, who live in temporary shelters.
According to the UNHCR, nearly 1.6 million internally displaced Ukrainians, including 50,000 people with disabilities, struggle to find safety, adequate housing and access to employment.
The conflict between government troops and pro-independence insurgents that started in April 2014 has left a total of 3.8 million residents of eastern Ukraine in need of humanitarian assistance.
