ISLAMABAD, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- Pakistani Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Friday strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Barcelona.

At least 13 people were confirmed dead and more than 100 others injured, with some of them in very serious condition in the Barcelona van attack on Thursday afternoon, Spanish officials said.

The Islamic State or Daesh had reportedly claimed the attack.

The prime minister said in a statement that Spain and its people have a long history of multiculturalism and defense of freedoms, and such terrorist attacks cannot scare the brave Spanish people.

"The terrorists that seek to change peoples' ways through fear and terror, underestimate the resilience of good people and the fundamental decency of the men and women they attack," he said.

It was the worst attack in Spain since March 2004, when militants placed bombs on commuter trains in Madrid, killing 191 people and wounding more than 1,800 others.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced three days of official mourning.
