NEW DELHI, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- The CEO and managing director of India's second largest software exporter Infosys, Vishal Sikka, resigned Friday.

The Board of Directors has accepted the resignation of Sikka "effective immediately," the company said in a statement.

He was appointed to the top post in June 2014.

In the statement, the company also said that its chief operating officer U.B. Pravin Rao has been appointed as the interim-managing director and chief executive.

However, Sikka will continue his association with the company as executive vice chairman till a new full-time CEO is appointed, Infosys said in a notice to the country's stock exchanges.

Shares of the company tumbled nearly 7 percent, following Sikka's resignation.

This is the second time in the past four years that Infosys has plunged into a leadership crisis ever since the founder members retired from the top management.
