In a joint statement to Spainish King Felipe VI and Prime Minister Rajoy Brey, President de Sousa and Prime Minister Costa said that they wish to "express the complete solidarity of Portugal with our brother people of Spain and our clearest condemnation for this terrorist act".
"We must reiterate on this difficult occasion the importance of a united Europe in the fight against terrorism and in the constant and permanent defense of the values of democracy, the promotion of peace and respect for human rights," the statement said.
"We have thus sent the solidarity of Portugal to all Spaniards, and especially to the families of the victims to whom we address, through Your Majesty and Your Excellency, the sentiments of our deepest sorrow," it said.
