TRIPOLI, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Special representative of the UN Secretary General and the head of the UN Support Mission in Libya, Ghassan Salame, on Thursday paid a visit to the western city of Zintan.

"The UN envoy met with the city mayor and representatives of committee of displaced people, and discussed the political agreement and support of the city's services," Media office of the Zintan's municipal council said in a statement.

"We are confident that this visit, the first for more than three years, will not be the last," Salame said in a press conference on Thursday in Zintan.

"Zintan wants to maintain leading role in achieving consensus and reconciliation. This is the message I take with me from here," Salame added.

Salame also visited the city's hospital, the mission said. "UN delegation visit to Zintan General Hospital was supported by WHO who will also provide the city with a mobile clinic."

Ghassan Salame recently visited Tripoli, Benghazi, and Misrata to communicate with all parties, in order to move the political stalemate.

Recently-appointed Salame replaced Martin Kobler, who led a series of political dialogue sessions between Libya's rival parties, which ended by signing a political agreement by the Libyan rivals and appointing a unity government. However, Libya remains politically divided amid insecurity and unrest.
