CARACAS, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Venezuela's National Constituent Assembly (ANC) has summoned the leaders of the opposition-controlled National Assembly (Congress) to appear before the body, the ANC said on Thursday.

ANC President Delcy Rodriguez tweeted "we have summoned the National Assembly's directive board to the constituent assembly's session."

Summoning the lead lawmakers, all members of the right-wing opposition, could set the stage for a showdown, as the assembly has refused to recognize the legitimacy of the ANC, an all-powerful, though temporary body that has the power to amend the Constitution.

The coalition of opposition party boycotted July 30 elections to elect the more than 500 members of the ANC.

Of Venezuela's five branches of government, the executive, judicial, electoral, citizen and legislative, the legislature is the only one yet to appear before the ANC.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was the first to fully recognize the superior power of the body and submit to its decisions.

More than 8 million Venezuelans went to the polls to elect the ANC, a turnout that appeared to signal significant support for Venezuela's ruling socialist party despite political unrest and economic woes. Enditem
