ACCRA, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Ghanaian government on Thursday appealed to the public to provide support for victims of the mudslide in Sierra Leone.

In a statement issued in Accra, the foreign ministry, on behalf of the government, appealed for medical supplies, financial support, food items and other support for victims of Monday's flood and mudslide which has killed many lives and left many more without shelter.

Meanwhile, Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says he has called President Ernest Bai Koroma to express his condolences to the people of Sierra Leone.

He noted that the Ghanaian government was in the process of sending relief items to the West African country to aid in the recovery process.

Nearly 400 people are confirmed dead and at least 600 missing following a devastating mudslide and floods in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown.

Heavy rain in the early hours of Monday was reported to have caused the side of a hill to collapse, trapping hundreds of people in the hilltop town of Regent on the outskirts of Freetown, a coastal city with a population of about 1.2 million.
