Man arrested after taking woman hostage at Dutch Media Park, motive unclear

THE HAGUE, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Dutch police arrested a man suspected of taking a woman hostage at the Dutch Media Park in Hilversum on Thursday, with his motive still being unclear.

According to a statement by the police, the 33-year-old suspect has been taken to the local police station for interrogation. His motive remains unclear. The woman did not get injured and declared to the police that she did not know the suspect.

Just after 8 a.m. Thursday morning the man threatened the woman with a knife and forced her to enter the building of Dutch public broadcaster NPO in Hilversum, in the province of North Holland, where among others the studios of Dutch radio channel 3FM are located. Inside the building she was held hostage.

The police arrived soon and a negotiator entered the building to try to make contact with the man. Around 9:30 a.m. he was arrested.

The woman is an employee of the NPO. The NOS said the man had entered the building with a big knife to her throat and that he had wanted to speak to someone from U.S. news channel CNN.
