VALLETTA, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Malta has signed its 15th cultural and educational agreement with Italy, a government press release revealed on Wednesday.

The agreement identifies cultural and educational activities and cooperation opportunities between the two countries for 2017 to 2019.

It is based on the cultural collaboration agreement signed between Malta and Italy in 1967.

Signed ahead of the upcoming state visit to Malta by the Italian President Sergio Mattarella in September, the agreement aims to increase understanding between both countries' communities, said the release.

It also supports direct collaboration between the universities and institutes for higher education, such as through teacher exchange and joint research projects.

Other areas of cooperation include music, publications, art restoration, preservation and management of national heritage, and archives and libraries.

The agreement also seeks to promote the Italian language and culture in Malta, as well as offer scholarship opportunities, and further collaboration in the film and television sector.
