TEHRAN, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) denied a report Wednesday saying it has launched independent ground operations against the Islamic State (IS) militants in Syria, the IRGC Spokesman Ramezan Sharif said.

However, the IRGC has plans to take revenge on the terrorists for the killing of its forces in Syria, Sharif was quoted as saying by the IRGC website.

The IRGC has launched a military operation in Hamimah region, northwest of the Syrian city of Homs, in retaliation for the killing of Iranian serviceman Mohsen Hojaji in Syria, reported Al Mayadeen satellite television channel.

Hojaji, a member of the Iranian advisory support team in Syria, had been taken hostage and reportedly beheaded by the IS militants near the Iraqi border in Syria.

Major General Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of the IRGC, has vowed revenge on the IS over the killing.

Sharif said the IRGC would keep providing advisory supports for the Syrian army and popular forces until the eradication of terrorism in the Arab country, Tasnim news agency reported.
