LOS ANGELES, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- More than 1,000 demonstrators on Monday evening took part in a bipartisan rally in Salt Lake City, capital of the Utah state, waving placards denouncing white supremacy and racism.
The evening rally was organized by the Utah state and Salt Lake city Republicans, while state Democratic leaders also joined and addressed the crowd.
From live stream video on twitter, crowd gathering at city hall chanted "Donald Trump, can't you (be) here, Nazis are not welcome here", waving placards that read "white supremacy = Nazism = evil", "no hate, no racism, no Trump", and "silence = consent".
According to the local KUAR 90.1 radio, Republican Congresswoman Mia Love delivered an emotional speech at the rally. She remembered when she did the first job she ever had as a swim instructor to grade schoolers, a young boy told her his parents did not like her just because she is an African American "and they think all black people are bad."
Love said she learned from that experience that hatred is not only taught but can be reversed, adding, "I'll tell you, we can fight hatred, no matter what's happening out there, we're standing together."
The rally held in the Republican stronghold of Utah is intended to condemn the bigotry and racism displayed during the Saturday violence in Virginia.
On Aug. 12, thousands of white nationalists, neo-Confederates and right-wing protesters, as well as groups opposing them, clashed during demonstrations in Charlottesville, a historic college town in Virginia.
After hours of brawls, a sports car ploughed into a group of counter-white supremacist protesters, killing a 32-year-old woman and injuring 19 others.
