Turkish police officer stabbed to death by IS terror attacker

ISTANBUL, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- A Turkish police officer was stabbed to death on Sunday in Istanbul by a suspected Islamic State (IS) militant who was detained for planning a suicide attack, local media reported on Monday.

The incident happened late Sunday night at the compound of the Vatan police station located in Fatih district, while the attacker was being taken out of the police car following his detain, CNNTurk said.

The assailant was immediately shot dead by the guards after the stabbing, and the police officer died from his wounds at the hospital, the report said.

It was not clear how the suspect has managed to hide the knife.

Anti-terror teams launched raid at several places in the district and detained at least 12 people after the incident, according to media reports.

IS, who is blamed for several deadly suicide bombings and gun attacks, has become one of the most serious threats to social security of Turkey.

According to report, Ankara has detained over 5,000 IS suspects, deported over 3,290 foreign militants from 95 countries, and also refused entry to more than 38,269 individuals.
