HANOI, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The Vietnamese government has approved the hiring of foreign consultants in assessing the expansion project of Tan Son Nhat international airport in Ho Chi Minh City, official media reported Saturday.

Foreign consultants will also be hired to assess the use of land for the domestic aviation sector and building plans for the airport expansion, as well as related development plans in the area, Vietnam News Agency reported Saturday.

The Transport Ministry has been asked to closely work with the Ministry of National Defense and the People's Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to create the best conditions for the selected foreign consultants to perform their work, the report said.

Tan Son Nhat airport, with a designed capacity of 25 million passengers, handled 32.5 million passengers in 2016. The expansion plan is expected to enable the airport to serve 40-45 million passengers per year.
