KUWAIT, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will hold its first Summit on Science and Technology in Kazakhstan in September, local media reported Thursday.

The summit will be held on 7-11 September in Astana, with the participation of OIC member states' leaders, the Kuwaiti official news agency KUNA reported.

The summit, whose main purpose is to develop the economic structure formed on the scientific and technological industry, will be the "biggest and most prominent" gathering for discussing scientific issues, the report quoted an OIC statement as saying.

Competition by Islamic countries on science and technology is much lower as compared to developed countries, it added.

OIC Assistant Secretary General for Science and Technology Muhammad Naeem Khan said the organization will create a strategy for science and technology for the coming 10 years.

The strategy will prioritize what can be accomplished in the field, and the member states will support the policies in their countries' development strategies.

Khan added that the summit is very important, as it will be the first OIC summit to be held in a central Asian country.
