Thailand, Russia vow to boost economic ties

BANGKOK, Aug. 10 (Xinhua) -- Thailand and Russia agreed to boost their economic ties Thursday when Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai met with visiting Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

According to a statement from the Thai foreign ministry, both sides had fruitful discussions on important issues of mutual interests, such as increasing bilateral trade and Russia's purchase of more Thai agricultural products.

Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in energy, science, technology and security, and promote Russian investment in Thailand. Thailand asked Russia to invest in Thailand's Eastern Economic Corridor project, according to the statement.

The Thai side also asked for Russian support for Thai investments in Russia and for starting the process of negotiating a free trade agreement between Thailand and the Eurasian Economic Union at the earliest opportunity.

Both sides also exchanged views on regional and global issues.

Lavrov visited Thailand from Wednesday to Thursday.
