BRUSSELS, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Nothing abnormal was found in a suspicious vehicle chased and intercepted by Brussels police in a bomb scare on Tuesday afternoon, according to Brussels public prosecutor.

The driver of the suspicious vehicle is identified as a former Rwandan citizen born in 1981, who was a resident in Belgium until 2009 and has since settled in Germany.

The man is unknown to the Belgian security system. He speaks incoherently and behaves rather unbalanced, according to Brussels prosecutor.

This came after hours of search and efforts by a bomb squad from Belgium's Service for the Removal and Destruction of Explosive Devices (SEDEE), which was called in to the scene to handle the emergency.

Brussels police opened fire at the vehicle and intercepted it after high-speed chase on Tuesday afternoon in the district of Molenbeek. The driver claimed that the vehicle contained explosives.

The hunt took place at around 5:00 p.m. local time after the suspicious vehicle failed to stop at a red traffic light. The driver refused to obey instructions of police officers and collided with a police vehicle, according to Belgian newspaper Le Soir.

Police used their guns to try to stop the vehicle from fleeing. However, he continued on the Ninove causeway in Molenbeek before hitting a second police vehicle.

Molenbeek gained global attention in 2015 after terrorists from the district carried out attacks in both France and Belgium. It is regarded as the European capital city of extremism.
