HANOI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Foot-and-mouth disease is hitting cattle in a town in Vietnam's central highlands Gia Lai province, the provincial Animal Health Bureau said on Tuesday.

The disease broke out in Ayun Pa town, affecting 449 cows and bulls raised by 72 households.

The local authorities are intensifying vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease among cattle, and isolation of the infected cattle to prevent it from spreading to other towns and districts of Gia Lai, home to some 450,000 bulls and cows.

Last week, foot-and-mouth disease was spotted in a commune in central Quang Ngai province.

Earlier in May, the Department of Animal Health under the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development announced that Vietnam was free from bird flu, and foot-and-mouth and blue-ear diseases.
