3.7 million households in Myanmar have access to electricity 2016: report

YANGON, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- A total of 3.7 million households out of 10.87 million got access to electricity in 2016 and 4.19 million households are expected to get electricity by mid-2017, said a report of the Myanmar News Agency Tuesday.

Of 63,859 villages nationwide, 31,804 villages had been supplied electricity as of May 2017.

Myanmar is implementing a national electrification project with a loan of 300 million U.S. dollars from the World Bank, prioritizing to electrify 630,000 families as the first phase, while the second phase targets 7.5 million people.

Meanwhile, a German government loan has electrified 416 villages in Taunggyi, Loilem and Linkhe areas in Shan state, the report said, adding that in all, 1,484 villages across Myanmar are to be electrified in 2017-18.

Talking to villagers in electrified Meikhtila-Wundwin, northern Mandalay region during her special visit on Monday, State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi stressed the priorities of peace and power supply in the country, pledging nationwide electrification.
