MOSCOW, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Eight workers remained missing on Monday after 142 were rescued in a flooded diamond mine in Russia's Arctic, the mine owner company Alrosa said.

The diamond mine was flooded by some 300,000 cubic meters of water from a neighboring abandoned quarry on Friday, leaving over 150 workers trapped underground.

With immediate rescue efforts, 142 of the total 151 people were quickly evacuated after the accident occurred.

Another worker was lifted to the surface early Saturday, while eight others were still missing.

The Mir mine, one of the main deposits of Alrosa, the country's top diamond producer, is located near the town of Mirny in Sakha Republic in far northeastern Russia.

The rescue operation was still underway, with more than 300 salvagers and dozens of units of equipment on the spot, the Russian Emergencies Ministry said.

Relatives of the missing miners were flown to Mirny.

The mine, over one kilometer deep, was commissioned in August 2009.
