MOSCOW, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The Russian Foreign Ministry on Monday called upon all parties involved to avoid using force on the Korean Peninsula issue and resort to diplomatic means in search of a possible solution.

"(Russian Foreign Minister) Lavrov called on all parties involved to show the utmost restraint in order to avoid implementation of negative power scenarios on the Korean Peninsula and immediately begin searching a political and diplomatic settlement through a comprehensive solution of the peninsula's problems, including its denuclearization," Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Lavrov held a meeting with Ri Yong Ho, his counterpart of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), on the sidelines of the ministerial meeting of the ASEAN Regional Forum on Security held in the Philippine capital Manila on Monday.

The two foreign ministers discussed the current situation on the Korean Peninsula in the context of ensuring security in Northeast Asia, the ministry said, adding that the parties also exchanged views on topical issues concerning development of bilateral relations.

On Saturday, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously adopted new sanctions on the DPRK over its two test launches of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).
