SHARAN, Afghanistan, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- As many as 25 militants were killed and 14 others wounded during a clash between security forces and Taliban militants in eastern Afghan province of Paktika, police said Monday.

"The clashes broke out after armed militants stormed Afghan Border Police (ABP) security checkpoints in surrounding areas of Gomal district on Sunday. As a result 25 insurgents, including several foreign militants, were killed and 14 others injured," provincial acting Police Chief Dadullah Hotak told Xinhua.

He confirmed that some units of ABP were still under the militants'siege in Gomal, bordering Pakistan, but reinforcement troops have been sent to the area to push back the attackers.

Security forces were not harmed during the clashes, according to Hotak.

The Taliban-led insurgency has been rampant since April when the militant group launched its annual rebel offensive in different places of the country, which had claimed hundreds of lives including militants, security personnel and civilians.

Taliban militants usually do not comment on their casualties and are yet to comment on the recent incident.
