TOKYO, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Typhoon Noru, the fifth one of this season, made landfall at northern Wakayama prefecture in western Japan, around 3: 30 p.m. local time (0630 GMT) on Monday, said the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The typhoon, with central atmospheric pressure at 970 hectopascals, had winds at a speed of 30 meters per second near its center, with gusts reaching nearly 45 meters per second, said the agency.
Heavy rain battered wide swathe of western Japan, and the weather agency warned about possible flooding, mudslides, violent winds and high waves.
As of 3:00 p.m. local time (0600 GMT), a total of 73,000 people in 32,000 households in five prefectures in western Japan were ordered or advised to evacuate.
On Sunday, two people were reportedly killed and 15 injured in southwestern Japan as Typhoon Noru drew near the main islands of Japan, bringing violent winds and torrential rain with it.
