ATHENS, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- A new heat wave is due to grip Greece this weekend onwards with temperatures soaring up to 42 degrees Celsius in some parts of the mainland over the next days, Greek meteorologists said on Friday.

Greece has suffered from two heat waves so far this summer with the thermometer rising in early July as high as 44 degrees Celsius in some parts of the country.

It was the worst heat wave in Greece since the summer of 2007 when mercury hit 46.5 degrees Celsius in the city of Elefsina, some 20 km southwest of Athens.

This time central and northern Greece will be the most affected, according to an announcement by the National Meteorological Service.

However, meteorologist Yannis Kallianos stressed that the heat wave, which is sweeping through Italy and other Balkan countries, will not hit Greece as hard in the coming days.
