BRATISLAVA, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) will investigate the suspicion about the distribution of EU funds for science and research by the Slovak Education, Science, Research and Sport Ministry.

According to a European Commission statement published on Friday, the Commission has informed Slovak authorities that it will proceed in processing the payment applications concerning the call for projects in question that were submitted by Slovakia only after obtaining the results of an audit regarding the selection procedure and after adopting appropriate corrective measures.

"The European Commission always takes all actions available to make sure that every single euro from the EU budget is spent in a rational and efficient way," said the statement.

The Slovak Education, Science, Research and Sport Ministry headed by Peter Plavcan, has been facing criticism over the shady distribution of EU funds for science and research, where succeeded mainly the private companies instead of the universities and scientific centres.

The parliamentary Opposition has demanded that Plavcan be dismissed from his post.
