SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- A 30-year-old civilian wounded in government forces firing succumbed Wednesday in hospital in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The civilian was hit by a bullet on Tuesday during protests and clashes against the killing of a top militant commander in Pulwama, about 27 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

According to health officials, Akeel Ahmad Bhat was hit in chest with a bullet.

"This is the second civilian death because of government forces firing on protesters in the district in the two days," an official said.

Shops, business establishments and offices remained closed.

Authorities have also imposed restrictions in areas falling under five police stations in Srinagar city and deployed forces at sensitive towns to prevent clashes and protests.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
