NEW DELHI, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- At least two persons have been killed and 11 others injured in a road accident in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, a police official said Tuesday.

"The accident occurred when a vehicle in which the victims were travelling fell into a ditch near Bhattakufer, some 16 km from state capital Shimla, after the driver lost its control late Monday night," he said on condition of anonymity.

While two persons died on the spot, those injured have been admitted to a government hospital, the official said, adding that the victims were returning home in Mashobra after attending a marriage function.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, though preliminary investigation has indicated that the vehicle was overloaded as it carried 14 people, including the driver while its capacity was just nine, the official added.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur mostly due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
