BERLIN, July 31 (Xinhua) -- More Germans were employed in June 2017 than at any point since German reunification in 1990, figures released Monday by the German Federal Statistical Office showed.

A total of 44.2 million individuals with German residency were employed last month, an increase of 657,000 individuals or 1.5 percent compared to June 2016.

Meanwhile, around 1.6 million people were unemployed in June 2017, 236,000 less than June 2016.

The improvement of the labor market in Germany reflected a wider trend which has held throughout the first half of 2017. Between May and June, a total of 84,000 more individuals (0.2 percent) were in work, a rise well ahead of the average monthly gain for the last five years (59,000).

The positive figures in Germany further underline growing economic momentum across the eurozone.

According to official figures released by Eurostat on Monday, unemployment levels in the currency bloc were at their lowest level in more than eight years in June at an average of 9.1 percent. The average for the entire European Union (EU) was 7.7 percent.
