KABUL, July 31 (Xinhua) -- Casualties were feared after two explosions and ensuing gunfire rocked central part of the Afghan capital of Kabul on Monday, witnesses and sources said.

"Two back to back blasts occurred in Shahrara neighborhood at around 11:10 a.m. (local time) in Police District 4, followed by firings. We still cannot provide details on causalities. There is fear of possible causalities," a security source told Xinhua anonymously.

Members of Afghan Special Force, known as Crisis Response Unit (CRU), together with several ambulances, arrived at the site shortly after the incident, according to a Xinhua reporter near the site.

An Afghan Public Order Police station, several government and private offices and an Iraqi Consulate Office are located at the area.

The CRU troops cordoned off the area for precautionary measures.

The blasts caused a plume of grey smoke to rise above the scene.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
