ALGIERS, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Libya's UN-backed Prime Minister Fayez al-Serraj visited Algeria on Saturday to discuss the latest developments in his chaos-ridden country.
Also head of the Presidential Council of the National Unity Government in Libya, al-Serraj said his visit "is part of the regular consultations and coordination with the Algerian authorities, as the latest developments of the Libyan issue are on the agenda of the visit."
Libya and Algeria are of mutual interest as of each other's stability and security, he added.
Algerian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday that the visit would boost "the peace process in this brotherly and neighboring nation," and would be an opportunity for Algeria to reiterate support for the peace process initiated by the United Nations.
Al-Serraj is also expected to brief Algerian officials over the meeting he held last week in Paris with commander of the rival Libyan National Army, Marshal Khalifa Haftar.
The two reached a cease-fire during the meeting, which is initiated by French President Emmanuel Macron, and pledged to work together to reach sustainable political solution to the six-year-long civil war.
Formerly, the Libyan protagonists reached a shaky peace accord following UN-sponsored talks held in the Moroccan resort of Skhirat on Dec. 17, 2015.
Libya now has two rival parliaments, namely the internationally recognized one based in the eastern port city of Tobruk, and Haftar's General National Congress based in the capital city Tripoli.
