KIEV, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The Ukrainian authorities have completely suspended electricity supplies to the area in eastern part of the country controlled by pro-independence insurgents, a senior Ukrainian energy official said on Wednesday.

"The certain districts of Donetsk and Lugansk regions are currently not consuming electricity produced by power plants located in the controlled part of Ukraine," Vsevolod Kovalchuk, the acting head of the Ukrainian state-run energy company Ukrenergo, wrote on Facebook.

The electricity flows to the insurgent-controlled territories in Donetsk region were ceased on midnight Wednesday, Kovalchuk said, without giving a reason for the blackout.

While commenting on the move, the rebel authorities of Donetsk region said that the cut-off will not affect consumers as two local power plants produce enough electricity to cover the needs of people.

The electricity supplies to the rebel-held areas in Lugansk region have been halted since April over non-payment.
