BERLIN, July 26 (Xinhua) -- German politicians from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Left Party on Wednesday called for an exact date to discontinue gasoline and diesel cars.
"The farewell to combustion technology will have to be launched in the near future," CDU politician Oliver Wittke said to German media.
Wittke noted that Germany would have to make a binding agreement after consultation with its European partners. "The right time for an exit is still to be clarified," he said.
Left Party politician Herbert Behrens also called for clear, timely decisions for the removal of fossil fuels in transport.
The British government announced its plan to ban petrol and diesel-fuelled vehicles by 2040 on Wednesday in a bid to improve air quality by reducing nitrogen dioxide emissions.
In addition, both politicians also demanded full clarification of all lately cartel allegations against leading car producers.
Since the past weekend, German media reported widely about the allegations that leading German automotive brands, including Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche, BMW and Daimler, colluded illegally since the 1990s triggering heated debate.
