CAIRO, July 26 (Xinhua) -- The future Syria should be a sovereign state without any place for terrorist groups on its territories, the Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit said on Wednesday.

The AL chief's remarks came during a consultation meeting of Arab permanent representatives at the league attended by Deputy UN Special Envoy for Syria Ramzy Ezzeldin Ramzy, held on Wednesday at AL headquarters in Cairo.

"There shall be no room for foreign militia, foreign fighters and terrorist groups on the territories of future Syria," said Aboul-Gheit, stressing the importance of the ongoing temporary ceasefire to stop bloodshed in the war-torn country.

"These temporary arrangements should not be an alternative for a political solution to the Syrian crisis," he added.

Latest UN-sponsored peace talks in Astana, Kazakhstan, failed to reach an agreement between the administration of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, mainly backed by Russia and Iran, and the exiled opposition.

Since erupting in March 2011, the Syrian crisis has claimed the lives of about half a million people and displaced and wounded over 14 million.
