MADRID, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Spanish civil guards have arrested a 22-year-old Moroccan man in northern Spain on charges of spreading propaganda for the Islamic State (IS) on the Internet, the Spanish Interior Ministry said here Wednesday.

The detainee has been maintaining "direct contact" with IS fighters in Syria and publishing materials that they sent him on his Facebook account, the ministry said.

He had also been spreading propaganda for the IS and other jihadist groups, such as Al Qaeda and Jabhat Fatah al-Sham since 2013, as well as praising attacks carried out by these groups and commemorating the 9/11 attacks on the Twin Towers in New York, according to the ministry.

Civil Guards also searched his home looking for information about other IS sympathizers in Spain, while the Interior Ministry reported that 231 people accused of jihadist terrorism have now been arrested in Spain since the start of 2015.
