NEW DELHI, July 26 (Xinhua) -- At least six people were killed and three others injured in a road accident in the Indian capital Wednesday, a senior police official said.

"The accident occurred on National Highway number 24 in Delhi this morning when a speeding truck jumped off a divider and collided head-on with a sports utility vehicle (SUV) coming from the opposite direction," he said, on condition of anonymity.

While five people died on the spot, those injured were rushed to a nearby hospital where one woman succumbed to her injuries, the official said. "The victims were all occupants of the SUV," he added.

Eye-witnesses told cops that the truck was travelling at high speed and the collision took place after the driver lost control of the vehicle.

A probe has been ordered into the incident though it seemed to be the fault of the truck driver, the official said. "A manhunt has also been launched to track down the truck driver who fled after the accident," he added.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Road accidents occur often due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.
