YANGON, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Bird flu has recently broken out in Dawei, Myanmar's southern Tanintharyi coastal region, an official report said Wednesday.

According to an announcement of the Ministry of Health and Sports Tuesday, more than 1,800 chickens were culled to prevent spread of the virus.

The local authorities have banned sale of eggs and chicken in the markets in Dawei.

The bird flu virus was detected at some farms in Dawei, some 370 km southeast of Yangon, following unusual death of chickens.

Samples of dead chickens, sent to Yangon laboratory for test, have proved the outbreak, the report said.

Bird flu has occurred in other places of Myanmar for eight times but the outbreak in Tanintharyi has been the first time, added the report.
