ADDIS ABABA, July 25 (Xinhua) -- Fifty-four people have been taken to hospital after being infected in an Acute Watery Diarrhea (AWD) outbreak in Ethiopia's Mekelle city, 783 km north of Addis Ababa.

Mekelle city health bureau chief Brikti Gebrekirstos says on Tuesday the patients were infected with the disease after eating unhygienic food and using poor personal hygiene practices.

Mekelle city health bureau has already dispatched health extension workers to teach the public on how to avoid practices that cause AWD.

The city's health bureau has also closed down three restaurants that were deemed to be facilitating the diarrhea outbreak through unhygienic practices.

Gebrekirstos further says the city has reserved a special ward in health centers for AWD sufferers and stocked on medicines to combat the outbreak.
