YEREVAN, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Armenia is determined in doing everything possible to further strengthen and develop relations with Georgia on the basis of traditional ties, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said on Monday.

He made the remarks in an exchange of pleasantries with his Georgian counterpart on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two neighbors, according to the official web page of the Armenian Foreign Ministry.

In his response, Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze highlighted that the current level of relations between the two countries fully reflected the traditional friendship of the two nations based on close historical ties.

Georgian FM Janelidze also reiterated his country's readiness to strengthen its cooperation with Armenia in different ways.

Armenia and Georgia established diplomatic relations in July, 1992. For a landlocked country such as Armenia, which is practically blockaded by the closed borders of Turkey and Azerbaijan, friendly relations with northern neighbor Georgia are of paramount importance.

Georgia serves as the main corridor for Armenian exports and imports coming into Armenia.

Despite the western-leaning orientation of Georgian politics and the brief Russian-Georgian war that occurred in 2008, Russian ally Armenia and Georgia have managed to maintain good-natured relations.
