WINDHOEK, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's Neckartal Dam which is under construction in the south of the country is experiencing water shortage which has hampered construction and to augment supply for the project, Namibia's water utility, Namwater will release water from another dam, according to an official.

The water utility issued a warning on Monday to travellers, residents and farmers along the Fish River to be cautious and take necessary precautions to ensure safety to prevent damage or loss to assets that are located near the river.

Namwater's acting head of marketing and communication, Hieronymus Goraseb, in a statement said water will therefore be released from the Hardap Dam as from Monday to satisfy the need of the project.

"The rate of release will be limited to a volumetric rate to prevent any damage to agricultural fields or private property in the vicinity of Mariental," he added.

According to Goraseb, in consultation with stakeholders, an analysis was done and it was found that releasing water from the Hardap Dam is the most viable option to resolve the water shortage at the project.

The Neckartal Dam construction started in 2013 and is expected to finish in 2017. The project is situated in the Karas Region in the south of the country. Once completed the Neckartal Dam will be the largest dam in the country, almost three times the capacity of the Hardap Dam upstream. Enditem
