JERUSALEM, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Clashes between Palestinian worshippers and Israeli police renewed outside East Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque on Saturday night.

The clashes broke out following the evening prayers at the compound, a day after three Palestinians were killed and hundreds injured as Israel's restriction on Muslim entrance to the site sparked anger throughout the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

A police statement said the protesters hurled water bottles at the police and were dispersed by stun grenades.

Live broadcasts from the Lions' Gate in the Old City, near the compound, showed protesters chanting "with our spirit, with our blood we will redeem you Al-Aqsa."

A group of policemen were also seen beating and kicking a protestor lying on the ground.

Clashes also broke out elsewhere in Jerusalem, including in A-Tur, where a youth was killed during a protest on Friday, the police said.

At least five Palestinians were injured, according to media reports.

Also on Saturday night, Israel was considering the removal of metal detectors that were installed at the entrance to the compound last Sunday.

The detectors, installed following a shooting attack that killed three Israeli policemen, sparked a huge protest. They are seen by the Palestinians as a violation of the status quo at the Muslim-run compound and an Israeli attempt to gain more control over the site.

According to a Channel 2 TV news report, the police and the municipality of Jerusalem are mulling over removing the electronic gates as soon as Saturday night or on Sunday.

Instead, Israel would implement selective security checks for suspects, the report said.
