9 killed, 22 injured in bus accident in W. India

NEW DELHI, July 22 (Xinhua) -- At least nine people were killed and more than 22 others injured in a bus accident in western Indian state of Rajasthan Saturday, police said.

"The accident occurred when the bus turned turtle near Nehla village, 10 km from Udaipur city, after the driver lost control of the vehicle while trying to avoid ramming into a biker," local police chief Rajendra Prasad told the media.

While nine people, including six women, died on the spot and those injured have been admitted to a local government hospital where the condition of some are said to be serious, the official said.

Apart from a driver and an assistant, the bus was carrying 32 people from the neighboring state of Gujarat who were on a 15-day pilgrimage and visiting religious places in Rajasthan and the northern state of Uttarakhand.

A probe has been ordered into the incident, the official said.

India has the highest number of road fatalities in the world. Most of the road accidents occur due to poor driving or badly maintained roads and vehicles.

Two days back, 30 people were killed and more than nine others injured after a private passenger bus plunged off a mountain road and rolled into a gorge in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
