KABUL, July 22 (Xinhua) -- Afghan President Ashraf Ghani congratulated the Afghan girls' robotics team on a big win during an international robotics contest held in the United States earlier this week, said the presidential palace on Saturday.

The six-member team won a silver medal Tuesday during the First Global Challenge event, a robotic contest that encourages youth to pursue careers in science.

"The president congratulates the Afghan girls' robotics team, their families, students and all people of Afghanistan on this breathtaking win," the palace said in a statement.

The Afghan leader has attributed the impressive win to the intelligence, courage, endeavors and creativity of the Afghan girls, the statement said, adding, "the participation and magnificent win of Afghan girls in the international robotics contest reflects the new image of Afghanistan."

"This win shows that despite problems, the Afghan girls are a role model for their peers in the fields of education and technology," Ghani was quoted as saying.

The Afghan youth should bring out the best of their ingenuity and ability and present the realistic image of Afghanistan to the world, he said.
