VIENNA, July 20 (Xinhua) -- British low-cost airline company easyJet has been given permission by Austrian authorities to establish a new EU-based airline headquarted in Vienna, local media reported on Thursday.
The company had chosen to establish a new airline within the European Union in light of the upcoming Brexit, that it has called easyJet Europe. It first had to apply for the necessary operating licenses and certificates, that have now been granted.
As a result, easyJet Europe is now officially in operation.
To mark the occasion, the first plane with Austrian registration landed at the Schwechat airport in Vienna this morning, having departed from London Luton Airport.
Austrian transport minister Joerg Leichtfried then officially presented the licenses and documentation to easyJet CEO Carolyn McCall.
About 110 planes and 4,000 employees based in EU27 countries are to be directed by the new Vienna-based airline.
