HONG KONG, July 19 (Xinhua) -- The Finance Committee of the Legislative Council (LegCo) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) Wednesday approved an extra funding of 3.6 billion HK dollars (about 461 million U.S. dollars) for education.

The committee held its final meeting Wednesday before the summer break. A number of items related to livelihood issues were on the agenda, including the education funding.

The Hong Kong SAR government announced on July 5 a package of new measures to address some of the issues in the education sector, which would involve an additional recurrent funding of about 3.6 billion HK dollars in a full year.

Secretary for Education Yeung Yun-hung said that after LegCo's approval, the new measures are expected to be implemented in September.

Yeung hoped that cooperation between the government and the education sector could be enhanced in the future to improve the education system of Hong Kong.

The new measures aim at addressing some of the resource issues in the education sector, which cover post-secondary, secondary, primary and kindergarten education, according to the SAR government.(1 U.S. dollar = 7.8 HK dollars)
