VIENTIANE, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Luang Prabang, Laos' well-known world heritage site of cultural value, has been voted among the world's top 15 cities by readers of "Travel + Leisure," a travel magazine based in New York City, the Lao media reported Tuesday.

The popular tourist destination of Laos came in tenth, scoring 90.10 in the Travel + Leisure World's Top 15 Cities in 2017, according to the magazine's website.

San Miguel de Allende of Mexico ranked top scoring 92.12, followed by Charleston of South Carolina on 91.54, while Chiang Mai of Thailand came third with a score of 91.40.

The score is based on a survey where Travel + Leisure magazine readers rate the best cities in the world on international travel experiences and destinations, including sights and landmarks, culture, cuisine, friendliness, shopping, and overall value.

This was the second time readers of the travel magazine voted Luang Prabang among the world's 15 best cities. Last year, the former Lao capital came in fifth among the world's 15 best cities.

"Visitors to Luang Prabang enjoy diverse attractions from well-preserved cultures, ancient cultural sites and there are many temples. There are awesome waterfalls and adventurous treks in forests and caves that tourists can enjoy," Director of Information, Culture and Tourism Department of Luang Prabang province Soulithip Norkhounphon was quoted by Lao state-run media Vientiane Times on Tuesday as saying.

Listed by UNESCO as a world heritage site for its cultural value, Luang Prabang has been voted by the world's leading travel magazines as one of the top global tourism destinations.
