BUDAPEST, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu complimented Hungary for "standing up" for the Jewish state here on Tuesday, after talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
"I discussed the concerns that I have heard from the Jewish community here. He assured me in unequivocal terms privately just as he did now publically. I appreciate that, these are important words," Netanyahu said in the Hungarian Parliament.
The Jewish minority in Hungary is about 100,000 people strong, one of the largest communities in Europe.
"I also want to thank you, prime minister, for standing up for Israel in international forums. You have done that time and time again. We appreciate this stance, not only as it is standing with Israel but also for the truth," Netanyahu added.
Netanyahu underlined that both Jews and Hungarians have suffered great tragedy, and have overcome it, and have both built modern vibrant states.
Orban said there was a very important Jewish minority living in Hungary, who witnessed a "Jewish renaissance". "This renaissance is contributing to our common Hungarian results."
Orban said the Hungarian government had declared a "zero tolerance" policy against anti-Semitism.
Netanyahu will meet the prime ministers of the Visegrad Four countries (Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia) on Wednesday.
