CAIRO, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian foreign minister Sameh Shokri asserted on Tuesday Egypt's full support for reaching comprehensive political settlement, restoring security and stability in war-torn Yemen.

Shokri discussed with the visiting U.N. special envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmad, the recent developments in Yemen and the exerted efforts for solving the ongoing crisis, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ahmad Abu Zeid said in statement.

The Egyptian foreign minister said Egypt closely follows the accelerated conditions in Yemen, and the efforts of the U.N. envoy for adhering to political tracks and working on improving the exacerbated human status that require international cooperation to stop the Yemeni people's suffering, the statement added.

Yemen has been suffering from a civil war and a Saudi-led military intervention for around two years.

The war pits the Shiite Houthi rebel movement against a Sunni Saudi-led military coalition, after the Houthis toppled Saudi-backed President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in late 2014.

The legitimate government controls the south and some eastern parts, while the Houthi/Saleh alliance controls the other parts including the capital Sanaa.

The UN has sponsored peace talks between the warring factions for several times, but the factions failed to reach a deal to end the civil war, which has already killed more than 10,000 people, half of them civilians, and injured over 35,000 others.
