BALATONFURED, Hungary, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Dutch swimmer Ferry Weertman won the men's 10 km open water event in 1 hour 51 minutes and 58.5 seconds at the 17th FINA World Championships on Tuesday in Lake Balaton, western Hungary.
Weertman was the Olympic gold medalist in the event at the 2016 Rio Olympics. In 2014, he became the European champion in the event. At the 2015 world championships, he won a silver medal in the same event.
Defending champion Jordan Wilimovsky of USA claimed the silver medal in 1:51:58.6, only 0.1 second behind Weertman. Olympic bronze medallist Marc-Antoine Olivier of France earned the bronze medal in 1:51:59.2. Olivier also won 5 km race at this World Championships.
British Jack Burnell stood fourth and Hungarian Kristof Rasovszky was fifth. David Aubry of France, Simone Ruffini and Evgenii Drattcev of Russia placed sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
Two Chinese swimmers attended the event. Zu Lijun finished 25th, while An Jiabao in 35th place.
The 17th FINA World Championships is running from July 14 to 30, with the open water discipline staged in Balatonfured 130km southwest to Budapest.
