SPLIT, Croatia, July 18 (Xinhua) -- After a day and night battle around Croatia's second-largest city Split, the fire that once threatened the famous tourist destination has been put under control on Tuesday.
A fire of unknown cause started Sunday night and ravaged the area near Croatia's Adriatic coast in Dalmatia region with the help of strong wind.
The blaze burned down pine forests and underbrush in extremely dry weather. Part of the population had to leave their homes that were endangered by the fire.
Over 700 firefighters and many locals have been battling the blaze on the ground. Croatia's military also sent over 100 troops and several firefighting Canadiar planes to join the battle.
On Tuesday, Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic arrived in Split, where he announced that the fire was now under control, after a working meeting with Defense Minister and Interior Minister.
Although the situation is not as critical as it was on Monday, when many homes and cars have burned, a smoke still can be seen near Split and around the Adriatic coast.
More than 80 people, mostly firefighters, have been injured in the fire. Fortunately, no causalities directly linked to the fire have been reported.
Croatian President Kolinda Grabar Kitarovic is also expected to arrive in the afternoon hours.
